Datura is a favorite poisonous plant of witches and magical practictioners alike. The genus Datura encompasses approximately nine different plants belonging to the Solanaceae family. All species of Datura are extremely poisonous and can cause hallucinations, delirium, madness, and even death. They are known for their showy, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in a spiral pattern and for their spike-covered seed pods. 

Datura is a visionary poisonous plant and deliriant, capable of inducing a trance-like state that aids in divination and astral travel. Because of its psychotropic effects, the plant is a staple ingredient in the infamous witch’s flying ointment. As such, Datura Stramonium is one of the many baneful “witch’s weeds” found in the herb cabinet of experienced magical practitioners and those on the poison path. 

Datura is also considered a psychopomp, guiding magical practitioners through different realms beyond the physical plane, particularly that of the afterlife. Because of this otherworldly capability, Datura is often used in necromancy to commune with spirits and walk beyond the veil.
